Description
DDO-002, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse on the 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln wheat cent with extra thickness on the date and a separation on the first 9. Both catalogs cite Cherrypickers listing 012.1, which Wexler numbers FS-01-1909-102 and VarietyVista FS-1102 (12.1). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY, plus a Class II separation line low on the first 9, and comments that the doubling is not especially strong. Obverse stage A has a die chip in the upper B of LIBERTY; by stage B chips show in the upper and lower B and the lower R; stage C adds a new chip in the upper R and a die clash mark at Lincoln's throat. The reverse is the V.D.B. type. In reverse stage A one die scratch runs NNE from the upper right of the O in ONE to the B in PLURIBUS, another runs NNE from the lower left of the N in ONE to the second U in PLURIBUS, and a long one starts at the upper left of the right wheat ear, heads SW across the A of STATES and bends slightly to cross the RI of AMERICA. In stage B these are weaker. In stage C all are gone except part of the scratch that ran across the A of STATES toward AMERICA's RI, and a die clash mark runs from the lower C of CENT down to the upper N of UNITED. Albert Raddi submitted stage A and Whaden Curtis stages B and C. CONECA lists the die as 2-0-VI; its Coppercoins number is 1909P-1DO-001. VarietyVista, crediting Randy Miller, describes extra thickness on the date with some separation on the first 9 and lists the reverse as RDV-001 (V.D.B.). Under marker codes UVC-1212 and DMR-007 it follows five stages: in stage A both sides are early; in stage B a die chip appears in the upper B of LIBERTY, early-middle, with the reverse also early-middle; in stage C the chip fills the whole B and another sits in the lower R, with a die clash at the throat, both sides in a middle die state; in stage D a chip fills the whole R, both sides late-middle; and in stage E the obverse is late and the reverse clash has worn away, also late.
