Documented by the Cuds on Coins reference catalog, RCD-1c-1907-02 is a retained cud on a 1907 Indian Head Cent — a die break where the fractured piece of the die remained partially attached in its socket rather than falling away completely, producing a raised area on the struck coin that retains partial design detail surrounded by visible crack lines. Unlike a full cud where the die fragment separates entirely and leaves a smooth, featureless blob, a retained cud preserves some underlying design elements within the affected zone because the still-attached die fragment continues to impart its design into the planchet, albeit imperfectly.
