Description

The 1901-P VAM-6 is a Morgan dollar from the Philadelphia Mint classified as III2-7 C4/C3b, with the dual reverse designation indicating features of both the 2 Olive Reverse and Double Profile varieties, bearing die pair identification (189). The obverse displays a slightly doubled profile from the forehead down to the chin, a hub doubling effect that traces the entire contour of Liberty's facial features with a secondary outline. The reverse is particularly distinctive for its extra olive to the right of the olive connected to the olive branch, along with doubling at the base of the top and left olive leaf clusters and the back of the arrowhead. A reverse die marker of a single diagonal polishing line on the right side of the wreath bow helps confirm attribution. The 2 Olive Reverse designation makes this an especially interesting variety, as the extra olive represents additional die detail rather than simple displacement doubling. The 1901-P Morgan dollar was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams at 38.1 mm diameter. The Philadelphia Mint produced 6,962,000 Morgan dollars in 1901, a relatively low mintage that makes the 1901-P one of the better dates in the series. George T. Morgan's reverse design, with its heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch within a wreath, contains numerous fine details in the wreath and arrows where variety characteristics can be identified by careful examination under magnification.
