1901-P VAM-14

Description

Discovered by Jeff Oxman in November 1999, 1901-P VAM-14 is catalogued as 14 III2 8 · C4/C3f — Doubled Ear and Cotton Bolls, 2 Olive Reverse — with an R-5 rarity rating, estimating 31 to 100 examples known. The obverse III2 8 shows slight doubling on the ear and cotton bolls. The reverse C4/C3f carries an extra olive over the first olive on the olive branch — the 2-Olive Reverse feature that is the primary reverse diagnostic for this die marriage. The 1901 Philadelphia Morgan dollar was struck in 90% silver. Jeff Oxman is a well-known numismatic author and variety specialist whose attribution work substantially expanded the 1901-P VAM census in the late 1990s. The doubled ear and cotton bolls on the obverse, combined with the distinctive extra olive on the reverse, make VAM-14 one of the more diagnostically layered die marriages in the 1901-P census. At R-5, confirmed examples remain scarce, and the 2-Olive Reverse is a feature that attracts specialist collectors focused on reverse die type varieties within the Morgan series.
