Error
Description
Discovered by Pete Bishal in December 1974, 1901-O VAM-7 is catalogued as 7 (revised) III2 3 · C4/C3r — Doubled 90, 2 Olive Reverse. The obverse III2 3 shows slight doubling on the top of the 9 and 0 of the date. The distinctive reverse C4/C3r carries a Medium O mintmark and a second olive over the first olive on the olive branch — an overcut design element that is among the more visually striking reverse varieties in the Morgan series. The extra olive is traceable as a raised doubled impression over the original olive, visible without magnification on well-struck examples. The 1901-O Morgan dollar in 90% silver had a New Orleans mintage of approximately 13.3 million pieces. Rarity: R-4, estimated 201 to 500 known to exist. The 2-olive reverse feature drives demand for VAM-7 beyond the standard doubled-date collector audience, drawing interest from variety specialists who prize design-element anomalies on the reverse. Bishal's 1974 discovery places this variety in the early generation of systematically identified Morgan VAMs.
