1901-O VAM-27

Description

Leroy Van Allen discovered this New Orleans Morgan dollar in December 1981. Cataloged as VAM-27 under classification III2 10 with a C4/C3k reverse, titled Doubled 01, 2 Olive Reverse, carrying a rarity rating of 181, the variety exhibits hub doubling on both the obverse and reverse. The 0 in the date is doubled strongly at the bottom outside, while the 1 shows doubling at the top right corner of its vertical shaft. The date is set at the left side of its normal position, and a slightly doubled profile adds to the obverse diagnostics. On the reverse, an extra olive appears to the right of the olive connected to the branch, creating the second-olive feature referenced in the title. Further doubling manifests at the base of the left olive leaf cluster, the back of the lower arrowhead, the upper portion of the eagle's left wing, and the right side of the eagle's nostril and eye. The mintmark is centered and upright. A short die scratch running from the D denticle to the right of the 1 in the date serves as the primary die marker for confirming the attribution. =1901-O VAM-27 Doubled 01, 2 Olive Reverse= Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1981.
