1901-O VAM-15

Description

Discovered by Jim Baxter in February 1979 and cataloged by VAMWorld, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is listed as VAM-15 under the revised classification III2 12 with a C4/C3d reverse, formally titled 2 Olive Reverse, 90 in Denticles. The obverse is identified by the tops of the digits 90 protruding into the denticle border as raised curved bars, each occupying a single denticle space directly below the respective numeral. This feature indicates the date was punched so deeply that portions of the 9 and 0 extend into the peripheral border zone. On the reverse, an extra olive appears to the right of the olive connected to the main branch, and doubling is evident at the base of both the top and bottom olive leaf clusters, the back of the lower arrowhead, and to the right of the eagle's nostril. The O mintmark is a Type III tilted to the left. The combination of the doubled reverse elements and the date-in-denticles obverse gives this variety two strong attribution points that are readily visible under low magnification.
