1900-P VAM-32

Description

Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in November 2003, the 1900-P VAM-32 is a proof Morgan dollar variety classified as 32 III227 - C3a (Near Date, 0 in Denticles) Proof. Proof Morgan dollars were struck in far smaller quantities than business strikes and command substantial premiums. The defining obverse characteristic is the position of the final 0 in the date, whose top extends into the denticles, appearing as a raised curved bar in the denticle space between the two zeroes and a small curved tick in the adjacent right denticle space. The date is set further left than normal, earning the Near Date portion of the classification. The reverse carries the standard C3a designation. Proof Morgans were struck from specially prepared dies on polished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, typically receiving multiple impressions for maximum detail. The extension of the 0 into the denticle border demonstrates how even carefully prepared proof dies could exhibit unusual positioning characteristics, and this date placement makes the VAM-32 identifiable with relatively low magnification once a collector knows what to look for among proof 1900-P Morgan dollars.
