Description

Edwin Miller's January 1970 discovery of VAM-21 on the 1900 New Orleans Morgan Dollar identified a near date and high O mintmark combination that has remained recognized for over five decades. Classified as 21 III2 5 C3l, the obverse shows the date set further left than normal with an open 9 — a numeral whose loop does not fully close, distinguishing it from closed-9 pairings. The reverse carries a Type III O mintmark positioned higher than standard, and some specimens exhibit a die crack through the tops of ED STATES OF, documenting progressive deterioration during the die's working life. The near date, high mintmark, and potential die crack give collectors three separate diagnostics for attribution. Miller's discovery occurred during the early period of systematic VAM research, predating the formal publication of Van Allen and Mallis's comprehensive catalog.
