Description

Discovered in 2017 by Brent Fogelberg, VAM-7C on the 1899-O Morgan Dollar carries the designation III2 1 with reverse die C3e and the descriptive title "High O, Die Gouge Wings," with catalogue identification number 181. The "C" suffix indicates this is the third documented die state or sub-variety within the VAM-7 die marriage, representing progressive changes to the dies that warranted separate catalog entries rather than simple die state notations. The obverse die III2 1 is described without additional diagnostics beyond its pairing classification, placing the primary attribution burden on the reverse. Reverse die C3e presents two dramatic features: a heavy slanted die gouge at the top of the eagle's right wing near the shoulder junction, and a series of diagonal heavy die scratches and gouges at the eagle's left wing/body junction and in the wing gap. These reverse die damage marks are substantial enough to be visible without magnification on well-preserved specimens, making VAM-7C one of the more visually accessible die-damaged varieties in the 1899-O census. The "High O" component of the description refers to the position of the New Orleans mintmark, set higher than normal relative to the eagle's tail feathers — a mintmark placement variation that resulted from the hand-punching process where an engraver at the New Orleans Mint positioned the O punch above its intended location. Struck at the New Orleans Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, the 1899-O Morgan Dollar had a mintage of approximately 12.29 million pieces. The combination of a positional mintmark variety (High O) with heavy die damage (the wing gouges) creates a multi-diagnostic variety that can be attributed through either the mintmark position or the die gouges independently.
