1899-O VAM-10B

Description

Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in April 2007, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-10B under Classification 10B III2 4, C3f. The variety is described as Slanted Date, High O, Clashed Obverse n. The obverse shows a clashed die with a faint partial incuse impression of the letter n from the reverse word "In" appearing next to Liberty's neck, transferred when the dies struck each other without a planchet. An important relationship note distinguishes this variety: 1899-O VAM-10 is the early die state of 1899-O VAM-10B but NOT of 1899-O VAM-10A, which represents a different die pair entirely. This distinction is critical for accurate attribution, as collectors might otherwise assume the three VAM-10 sub-varieties share a linear die-state progression. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at the New Orleans Mint, the 1899-O Morgan Dollar was produced near the end of the original series run, which would conclude at most mints after 1904. The slanted date, high O mint mark, and clashed n impression together provide three independent diagnostic features for confirming the VAM-10B attribution.
