1899-O VAM-16

Description

Discovered by Oscar Simpson in April 1977, VAM-16 of the 1899-O Morgan Dollar is classified as a doubled first 9 variety. Cataloged as 16 III2 10 with a C3a reverse pairing, the obverse carries a Type III2 die in its tenth die pairing and exhibits doubling on the first numeral 9, which appears doubled at the right side and slightly at the left outside of the lower loop. The secondary impression flanking both sides of the lower loop creates a subtle widening that distinguishes this digit from the sharply defined second 9. This doubling resulted from slight hub displacement during die preparation, leaving a faint ghost image around the lower portion of the first 9. The New Orleans Mint struck Morgan Dollars from 1879 through 1904, and the 1899-O had a substantial mintage exceeding 12 million pieces, making the base date readily available while the specific VAM-16 variety requires careful examination of the date numerals. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 26.73 grams, this Morgan Dollar preserves diagnostic doubling on the first 9 visible at the right side and outer left of the digit's lower loop.
