Description

Carrying the classification III2 8 - C3h, this 1899-O Morgan Dollar VAM-14 was discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in December 1974 and is identified by doubled 89 digits and a high O mint mark shifted left. The obverse die (III2 8) shows the 8 and 9 of the date doubled slightly at the top inside of the upper loops — a subtle secondary impression visible under magnification where the upper curves of both digits display faint extra lines above the primary strokes. The reverse carries the C3h designation, with the O mint mark from the New Orleans Mint set noticeably high and shifted to the left of its typical centered position beneath the eagle. Mint mark positioning anomalies like this occurred because each working die received its mint mark via a separate hand-punching operation. Collectors should examine the upper loops of the 89 digits for doubling and confirm the high-left O placement for attribution.
