1892 Repunched Date WRPD-002

Description

A dual variety on the inaugural year of the Barber Quarter, this 1892 specimen combines a repunched date with a doubled die obverse — two distinct die-making errors on the same coin. The repunched date is classified as WRPD-002 with Lawrence L-101 and Flynn RPD-002 cross-references: the 1 and 8 show repunching to the south while the 2 shows repunching to the north, indicating the date logotype was punched into the die, repositioned, and punched again. This die also qualifies as WDDO-003, a Class II doubled die with spread toward center visible on all obverse stars, the bottom and left of the ribbon, IN GOD WE TRUST, and slightly on the bonnet and profile. Class II doubling results from a rotational difference between hub impressions during die manufacture. Attribution is by the Wexler Team. The 1892 Barber Quarter is the first year of Charles Barber's Liberty Head design, which remained in production through 1916, and first-year issues carry inherent collector appeal. Finding both repunched date and doubled die characteristics on a single die from the series debut year makes this a desirable variety for Barber Quarter specialists and error-variety crossover collectors.
