Description

WDDO-003 on the 1892-O Barber Quarter carries cross-references Flynn DDO-003 and Wexler Variety ID 1892-O 25¢ WDDO-003. The doubling is Class II tripling that spreads toward center on USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, dots, all stars, and the outer left banner, with slight spread on E PLURIBUS. The obverse die is WDDO-001 — the first cataloged doubled die obverse for this date — establishing that WDDO-003 shares an obverse type with WDDO-001 rather than using a wholly distinct die. A die scratch is present in the upper ear, and the mintmark is set low on the reverse. A die crack runs through the lower 892 digits to the first star on the right, and a vertical die scratch runs through the back of the ear. The reverse is designated WDDR-003 and carries four parallel die scratches running northwest from the upper first A in AMERICA — a distinctive reverse die marker set. The Flynn DDR-001 cross-reference applies to an associated reverse doubling. The 1892-O Barber Quarter is a 90% silver New Orleans Mint issue. Barber Quarters are 90% silver. The WDDO-001 obverse type and the low mintmark position are useful initial triage checks before verifying the full tripling spread across the design elements. Reverse: Mintmark is set low.Submitted By: Charlie Nowack through Dave WilsonCross References: Flynn: DDR-001 Obverse: Die crack through lower 892 to first star on right. Short die gouge south from bottom of ear lobe.
