Description

=1891-S VAM-1C1 Thorned Neck Die Gouges= Discovered by Herb Zepke, April 2000. 1C1 III2 14 · C3f (Thorned Neck Die Gouges) (190) Reverse C3f – Short die gouges around eagle’s neck w/five in back & three in front. S mint mark set slightly to the right and upright. Short die gouge between eagle’s left wing & body. Small die break in wreath next to berry next to CA in AMERICA. DPIS - C3/LE5 ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: 23, 1C1, 1C2, 20 :Reverse: 1C1, 1C2, 5E Comments: # The 1891-S VAM-1C1 has 5 short die gouges in back of the eagle's neck and 3 in front. The 1891-S VAM-1C2 has had all but 1 (in front) removed. The 1C1 appears to be significantly more difficult to obtain than the 1C2. # The exact same reverse die was used to produce the 1891-S VAM-1C1, 1891-S VAM-1C2 & 1891-S VAM-5E. The 5E shows clear evidence of a significant clashing event. # 1891-S VAM-1C1, 1891-S VAM-1C2, & 1891-S VAM-Yet to be "Discovered" were all made with the exact same obverse die. # The date position on the 1891-S VAM-1C1 & 1891-S VAM-1C2 is normal and for the 1891-S VAM-5E it is far.
