Error
Description
Discovered by Laurence Galbraith in October 2006, the 1891-S VAM-16 Morgan Dollar is designated Far Date, Doubled Arrow Feathers, and is classified under die marriage III2 4 with reverse die C3e. The reverse die C3e exhibits slightly doubled arrow feathers and shafts along the lower edge of the eagle's talon bundle, along with doubling on the top inner feathers of the eagle's right wing. Additional doubling is visible on the lower inside of the letters ED and TAT, spread towards the rim. The Far Date designation indicates the date numerals are positioned farther from the rim denticles than typically seen on this issue. The 1891-S Morgan Dollar was among the later San Francisco issues before the series' temporary suspension in 1904, and the discovery of new varieties from this date over a century after production speaks to the depth of the Morgan Dollar die marriage catalog. Laurence Galbraith's identification of the arrow feather doubling on the C3e reverse added an important entry to the 1891-S listings.
