Description
A WOW! VAM — among the most visually arresting retained-cud varieties in the 1891-O Morgan Dollar series — VAM-9B carries a large cud erupting from the rim deep into the tops of the letters ITE in UNITED, with an accompanying field displacement break at the top of the left wreath. Catalogued as III24 C3E, this is the late die state of VAM-9A; VAM-9A represents the early die state of the same obverse, making these two varieties a direct die-progression pair. The O mintmark registers as almost high rather than definitively high. The 1891-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design. Cuds of this scale — extending from the rim well into the lettering zone — are among the most sought die-break forms in Morgan Dollar collecting, and the WOW! designation reflects collector consensus on the variety's dramatic visual impact. Discovered in 2009, VAM-9B is a strong candidate for registry-set collectors targeting dramatic late-die-state Morgan Dollar errors.
