1891-O VAM-1A Clashed E Reverse Discovered by Francis Klaes, June 1963. This coin is a Top 100 and a WOW! Morgan VAM. 1A III2 1 • C3a (E on Reverse) (181) Reverse C3a - Clashed die with full E under eagle's tail feathers on left side. Notes: The die states of the 1891-O VAM-1A die pair have been catalogued as 1891-O VAM-1A1, 1891-O VAM-1A2, 1891-O VAM-1A3 & 1891-O VAM-1A4. This VAM has the strongest E clashed on the reverse of any Morgan dollar, with many other letters of LIBERTY being visible as well. In fact, the E on the reverse looks like it was actually part of the design it was so strong. This is a really cool variety well worth a substantial premium to own in AU. Mint state examples are exceptionally rare. A letter from Acting Mint Director Robert Preston, dated September 22, 1891, was found in 2020 (NARA RG104 E-1 Box 172) that refers to this variety as seen on coins submitted to a special assay.
