Description

Bearing the coveted CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint, this 1890-CC Morgan Dollar VAM-9A was discovered by Calvin Cherry in November 2005. The variety features a near date position with a die crack extending from the neck point of Liberty through the first and second left stars, including a horizontal break between those two stars. Classified as 9A III25 - C3a (Near Date, Die Break Between 1 & 2 Left Stars) (unknown DPIS), the die crack pattern traces a path from Liberty's portrait outward through the star field, documenting progressive structural failure in the obverse die. The Carson City Mint operated in Nevada from 1870 to 1893, and its Morgan Dollars command substantial premiums over Philadelphia and New Orleans counterparts — the remote Western mint's lower production volumes and frontier mystique have made CC-mint coins among the most prized in the series. The near date positioning indicates the date sits closer to the rim than typical, a subtle but diagnostic placement difference that helps differentiate this die from others used during the 1890 Carson City production run.
