1889-P VAM-12
Error
Description
Discovered by Fred Miller in February 1979, the 1889-P Morgan Dollar VAM-12 is one of the earlier documented VAM discoveries in the Philadelphia Mint series. Classified as III2 12, die pair 190, with a C3a reverse, the variety features a doubled 1 with slight doubling visible below the upper crossbar of the numeral. The date is set further right than normal, and the 9 is positioned high. Collectors should note that even on the VAM-12, traces of the beginning of the die chip near the first left star—the defining pickup point for VAM-12A—may be visible, indicating that these two varieties represent progressive states of the same die. The rightward date position and high 9 provide quick sorting criteria when searching through 1889-P Morgans, while the doubled 1 crossbar requires magnification to confirm. This variety demonstrates how closely related VAM sub-varieties can share the same die with distinguishing features developing as the die wears through production.
