1889-O VAM-21
Error
Description
Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in May 2002, VAM-21 on the 1889-O Morgan Dollar is cataloged as III2 1 - C3i, documenting a reverse die with a Type III O mintmark set distinctively to the left of the standard position. The C3i reverse die designation specifies the leftward mintmark placement that defines this variety — New Orleans Mint engravers punched the O mintmark into each working die individually, and leftward placement of the mintmark relative to its usual centering beneath the wreath bow creates a measurable positional anomaly. Commentary accompanying this variety notes a die crack to the right of the mintmark that extends across from the left wreath, through the bow, and down into the top of the first L in DOLLAR — a substantial die crack network that traces a diagonal path across the lower reverse and provides an important secondary attribution point. The 1889-O Morgan Dollar is one of the most condition-sensitive dates in the entire Morgan series: while its 11,875,000 mintage makes it readily available in lower circulated grades, gem uncirculated specimens are legendary for their rarity, with auction records consistently placing high-grade 1889-O dollars among the most valuable Morgan Dollar dates. This condition-rarity dynamic makes die variety identification through VAM attribution especially significant for the 1889-O, as establishing which specific die pairs produced which specimens allows population analysis that refines understanding of the date's survival rates across different die combinations. The die crack network documented on VAM-21's reverse suggests the die accumulated considerable use before retirement, potentially producing a relatively small number of identifiable specimens from this specific crack state.
