1889-O VAM-12A
Error
Description
Classified as III2 7, die pair 181, with a C3a reverse, the 1889-O Morgan Dollar VAM-12A is designated as Doubled 1, Far Date, Extra Star Point. A die crack runs through the bottom of the left stars and over to the neck point, with a break on the right side of the first left star forming an extra point that serves as the primary pickup feature. Slight tripling of the earlobe bottom is also present. This variety was formerly cataloged as VAM-13E before reclassification. The reverse carries some faint shallow diagonal die gouges in the E and DO area. The extra star point created by the die crack and break is one of the more visually distinctive diagnostics in the 1889-O Morgan Dollar series, as it produces a visible anomaly in an area that collectors naturally examine. The earlobe tripling provides secondary confirmation on the portrait side of the design.
