Description
1889-O VAM-16 Far Date, High O Discovered by Martin Field, September 1980. 16 III2 8 - C3f (Far Date, High O) (181) Obverse III2 8 - Date set further right than normal. Die chips between loops of first 8 left and right may be present. Reverse C3f - III O mint mark set upright and high. '''DPIS - Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: '''Comments: There are two recognized die pairs for this VAM. The far dates differ in precise position and the mintmarks are different and in different positions. The second pair's date is further and develops a denticle cud in later stages below the neck point and 18. The first pair has a much higher mint mark with a slot center and is often confused with an oval O. The late stage of the second pair reverse develops a notable crack through the mint mark too. Both obverses apparently have unlisted doubled ears, with the doubling on the right inside.
