Description

Assigned in 2009, 1889-CC VAM-6 is catalogued as 6 III2 3 · C3b — Far Date, CC Set Right. The obverse III2 3 shows the date set further right than normal. The reverse C3b carries a CC mintmark set further right than normal, with a short diagonal die crack from the right ribbon bow to the wreath as the primary die marker. Rarity has not yet been established for this variety. The 1889-CC is a KEY DATE Morgan Dollar — among the most important coins in the entire Morgan series, with a mintage of approximately 350,000 pieces, the lowest of any CC-mint Morgan dollar. Carson City ceased Morgan production after 1893, and the 1889-CC's scarcity makes it highly sought regardless of VAM attribution. The CC mintmark, even when set right as on VAM-6, commands a premium over P-mint and S-mint Morgans of comparable grade. The combined characteristics of the far date position on the obverse and the rightward CC on the reverse, along with the ribbon-bow die crack, provide a clear set of identification criteria for this die marriage. ''Die Markers'' - Fine diagonal die scratch from right wheat leaf to left cotton leaf.
