Description

Discovered by Oscar Simpson in April 1977, VAM-8 on the 1888-P Morgan dollar is cataloged as 8 III2 6 - C3a (Near Slanted Date) with die pair number 190. The primary obverse diagnostic centers on the date position: the numerals are set further left than the normal centering and slanted, with the final 8 sitting measurably far from the denticles at the rim. This positioning distinguishes VAM-8 from the normal date placement seen on the majority of 1888-P die pairings. A thread-like impression at the front of the forehead and hair adds a secondary die marker — likely a faint die polish line or very fine crack that aids in confirming the specific obverse die. The date is set higher than the related VAM-7 die, a comparison that helps collectors differentiate between these two near-date varieties from the same year. Philadelphia struck just over 12.1 million Morgan dollars in 1888, a relatively moderate production compared to peak years, making individual die pairings somewhat easier to isolate than on dates exceeding 20 million coins. The C3a reverse classification indicates a standard reverse die configuration without distinctive characteristics. VAM-8 was among the earlier discoveries in the 1888-P catalog, reflecting its recognition as a clear and diagnosable date position variety by first-generation VAM researchers.
