Description

Attributed to Mark Kimpton in May 2003, the 1888-O VAM-1C carries the designation 1C (revised) III21 / C3a (Clashed Obverse n and st, Reverse Partial M) with VAMWorld reference number 181. Obverse die III21 shows strong die clash evidence: a faint partial incuse impression of the n from IN (from the reverse) appears next to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse st from TRUST is visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. Reverse C3a bears the complementary evidence: a faint partial raised impression of the designer's initial M from the obverse shows above the d in GOD. Die clash Morgans are actively collected, particularly when transferred letters are legible on circulated examples. The two-sided clash — reverse-to-obverse letter transfer (n and st) plus obverse-to-reverse initial (M above d) — gives this variety strong markers on both faces. The (revised) notation indicates the classification was updated after initial listing. New Orleans Mint Morgans of 1888 are a mid-series date with adequate circulated supply, and clash varieties reward the patient attributor. =1888-O VAM-1C Clashed Obverse n & st, Reverse Partial M= Discovered by Mark Kimpton, May 2003.
