Description

Keith Chambers discovered this San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollar variety in January 2025, making it one of the newest additions to the VAM catalog for the 1884-S date. Designated as a far date variety, the date digits sit noticeably further from the rim than standard alignment. In its early die state, stronger lines appear within LIBERTY and at the left end of the cap ribbon, details that may soften as the die wears through subsequent stages. The reverse shows later die state characteristics, including a chip on the top outside of the left wreath that developed as the die accumulated service. The Die Pair Identification System classifies this as DPIS LE4/RH5, with emission sequence Obverse 27,17 and Reverse 15,27 — tracking which die pairs were used and in what order they entered and left service. With engraved leaf detail on the reverse, VAM-27 pairs the far date obverse with distinctive wreath characteristics. The 1884-S Morgan Dollar had a mintage of approximately 3.2 million, one of the lower San Francisco totals in the series, and recent discoveries like this 2025 attribution demonstrate that the VAM catalog continues expanding through active collector research.
