Description
Discovery March 2024, Alan Scott 23 III2 3 • C3m (Very Far Date, S Set Right, Dbl Left Reverse) (187) Obverse III2 3 - Date set much further right than normal, at edge of what would be considered the ‘very far’ date position. ''Die markers'' - X shaped die scratch in bottom of ear opening. Closely spaced group of diagonal scratches thru center of Y. Reverse C3m - S set right, with upper serif under right edge of bow knot. Small lump from upper edge of center stroke in middle of upper opening of mintmark. Doubling on left reverse from working hub first used in 1878, listed as C3b. Letters of UNITED and leaves in left wreath bough doubled towards rim. Spike from right foot of T of UNITED is diagnostic for this working hub. Leaves above ONE detached with a small chip on lower edge above left side of N. Trace of break begins to form in left wreath opposite space between NI ''Die markers''- Pair of short diagonal lines pointing up to left from wing edge inside wing-neck gap. Short horizontal lines inside left leg above talon. DPIS - LE4/RH5 Comments: # This VAM was produced but the exact same die pair that produced the 1884-S VAM-23A but this is before the upper wreath die chip.
