1884-S VAM-19
Error
Description
Discovered in December 2022 by Ed Pope, this San Francisco Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-19 under classification III2 2 with a C3l reverse, described as Far Date with Re-engraved Leaves. The obverse carries a date set to the right of the normal position, with die markers that include polishing lines running through LIBERTY and the cotton bolls, plus a fine line in the recessed area below the left end of the cap ribbon. On the reverse, the S mintmark stands filled, upright, and centered, while the wreath leaves adjacent to the N of ONE and the UNI of UNITED show clear re-engraving. The die pair index stands at B34/C5. Importantly, this reverse die also produced 1884-S VAM-4B, meaning both varieties share the exact same reverse die paired with different obverse dies. Polishing lines visible in the wing-neck gap and within the wreath bow serve as additional reverse die markers. The re-engraved leaf clusters near the legend provide the clearest attribution point, distinguishing VAM-19 from other 1884-S varieties that lack this reverse reworking.
