Description

A positional date variety, the 1884-P VAM-8.2 features a far date — the numerals are set further right than the normal position — on a Type III2 die 8 obverse paired with a standard C3a reverse. The ".2" suffix in the VAM designation identifies this as the early die state of the 1884-P VAM-8B, meaning both varieties share the same physical dies but are distinguished by the progression of die wear and characteristics that develop over the die's working life. Early die state examples preserve the die's original condition before accumulated striking cycles introduce wear markers, cracks, or other deterioration features that define later die states. The far date position results from the placement of the date punch during die preparation — when the digit punches were set further right in the die than the standard reference position, the resulting coins show the date shifted toward the right side of the field.
