Description

Discovered in 2010, VAM-11 on the 1883-S Morgan Dollar carries the designation III210 with reverse C3a and the title "Doubled 18-3," documenting hub doubling that affects three of the four date digits — the 1, the left (first) 8, and the 3 — each showing displacement in a specific direction that reveals the geometry of the hubbing offset. The digit 1 shows doubling at the right side of its vertical shaft, the left 8 displays doubling at the left inside of both loops (upper and lower), and the 3 shows doubling at the right side of its upper ball — three different displacement directions on three adjacent digits that collectively map the complex curvature of the hub misalignment across the date region. This multi-directional date doubling pattern indicates a rotational or pivoted displacement rather than a simple linear shift, as a uniform linear offset would produce the same displacement direction on all affected digits. A diagnostic obverse die marker consists of doubled diagonal polishing lines at the bottom edge of the Phrygian cap — the ancient liberty cap atop Liberty's head — where die preparation lines show their own doubled pattern, confirming that the polishing occurred before the second hub impression was applied. The reverse C3a designation is a standard classification without distinctive features noted. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams, the 1883-S Morgan Dollar is one of the semi-key dates in the series with a mintage of approximately 6.25 million pieces. The multi-digit doubling with varying displacement directions makes this VAM particularly interesting for die manufacturing analysis, as the pattern constrains the possible hub misalignment geometries to rotational models.
