Error
Description
Documented by C. Logan McKechnie in June 2006, VAM-20 for the 1883 Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar carries the plate identification 20 III2 20 - C3a (Doubled 18) (180). The obverse die displays doubling on the first two date digits with distinct displacement on each: the 1 is doubled on the right side of its vertical shaft, while the first 8 shows doubling at the left inside of both loops and slightly at the right outside of the lower loop. Such multi-directional doubling on a single digit can result from rotational misalignment between hub and die during secondary hubbing, producing varying displacement at different points around the curved loops. The reverse die is classified C3a, a normal die state. Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollars from 1883 bear no mint mark and were produced in substantial quantities, though individual die varieties remain of interest to VAM collectors. Attribution requires examining the 1 and first 8 under magnification to confirm the described doubling directions on each numeral. =1883-P VAM-20 Doubled 18= Discovered by C.
