Description

Jeff Oxman discovered this Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety in February 1998, with the listing subsequently revised in 2013. Classified as 16 (revised) III2 16 - C3a, the VAM-16 carries the descriptive label "Doubled 1, Dash" and a rarity rating of 193. On the obverse, the numeral 1 is slightly doubled at the top right, and a small short dash sits well below the right 8. The date also shows a slight slant with 83 positioned higher than 18, a lateral tilt that provides an additional visual cue for attribution. A curved polishing line below Liberty's ear serves as the primary die marker. The Reverse C3a is a normal die with no distinctive characteristics. The date slant is noteworthy because it indicates the date punch logotype was set at a slight angle during die preparation — a phenomenon more readily detected on higher-grade specimens where the denticle relationship to the date numerals remains crisp. Oxman's revision in 2013 refined the original description to ensure more precise attribution criteria for this variety. =1883-P VAM-16 Doubled 1, Dash= Discovered by Jeff Oxman, February 1998.
