Description
1881-S VAM-1A Spike in 8's Discovered by Bill Fivaz, February 1973. Revised 2010. 1A(revised) III21 · C3a (Spike in 8's) (186, 189) Obverse III21– First 8 has short die chip inside upper loop at 11 o’clock. Second 8 has die flakes in lower loop. Some specimens also show short die chip inside upper loop at 11 o’clock on second 8 and die flakes at top inside of lower loop of first 8. Emission Sequence Obverse: 1A, 8A Reverse: Comments: April 2010 -- The die gouge by the O in DOLLAR was removed from 1881-S VAM-1A and made the diagnostic of 1881-S VAM-1D. This exact same obverse die was used to produce the 1881-S VAM-8A (but it has an "ear" on the second 8 by then). This die pair shares NO die with the 1881-S VAM-1A1.
