1881-P VAM-1D

Description
Discovered in 2011, the 1881-P VAM-1D documents a remarkable and unusual die anomaly: a curvy thread-like die impression that traces a path through the letters IB, up to the lower wheat leaf, and back down to the bottom of E in LIBERTY on the obverse of this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar. Cataloged as 1D III2 1 - C3a (Thread-Like Die Impression IBE) with an unassigned rarity rating, this variety exhibits a type of die surface mark that defies easy classification — neither a standard die crack (which follows linear stress paths) nor a typical die scratch (which is usually straight), the thread-like impression follows a curving trajectory through multiple design elements. The mechanism that produced such a winding impression remains open to interpretation: possibilities include a thread or fiber from cleaning material that became embedded in the die surface under striking pressure, a hair-thin metal filament that transferred from a foreign object, or an extremely fine die crack that followed the grain structure of the die steel along a non-linear path. The Obverse III2 1 type and Reverse C3a pairing represent standard die types for the 1881-P Morgan Dollar, making the thread-like impression the sole distinguishing characteristic of this variety. The "1D" suffix indicates this is the fourth sub-variety added to the VAM-1 die pairing for the date, discovered well after the initial normal die baseline was established. Morgan Dollars from the Philadelphia Mint in 1881 were produced in a mintage of 9,163,975, and the thread-like die impression's unassigned rarity suggests it had not been sufficiently surveyed at the time of cataloging, leaving its true population unknown.
