Error
Description
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in March 1974 — the co-creator, with A. George Mallis, of the VAM classification system itself — VAM-29 in the 1880-S Morgan Dollar series carries a distinctive S mintmark tilted left paired with tripled date digits, catalogued III2 19 C3c: Doubled 880, S Tilted Left. The obverse shows the first 8 doubled on the top surface at the bottom right outside and top left inside of the lower loop; the second 8 doubled at the lower left outside of the upper loop; and the 0 doubled slightly at the lower left inside. Reverse C3c is described as a normal die with a very large centered mint mark tilted left. The 1880-S Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the San Francisco Mint under George T. Morgan's design; 1880-S is one of the most heavily VAM-researched Morgan Dollar issues. A variety documented by Leroy Van Allen carries particular significance within the collector community, as it reflects the foundational era of systematic Morgan Dollar die variety cataloguing.
