Description
=1880-CC VAM-9 8/7 Dash= Discovered by Ted Clark, October 1970. Reverse discovered by Howard Newcomb, February 1913. 9 III2 6 ∙ C3a (8/7 Dash) (177) Obverse III2 6 – Right 8 not polished like 1880-CC VAM-8. Reverse C3a – Normal die of C3 type with large V CC mint mark and slanted arrow feathers. Small die chips above STATES OF and small round die chip at lower right L in DOLLAR. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: Comments: # The 1880-CC VAM-9 "Reverse of 79" shares the same obverse as the 1880-CC VAM-7 but differs with the reverse type die used. The 1880-CC VAM-9 has the "Slanted Arrow Feather" (SAF) reverse while the 1880-CC VAM-7 " Reverse of 78" has the "Parallel Arrow Feather" (PAF). The 1880-CC VAM-9's date is positioned normally with the key attribution point being the 8 punched over the 7. The second 8 shows the remains of the underlying 7's stem as a dash below the 8 along with two diagonal polishing marks inside the lower loop, with faint ears on the outside of the top left loop. # This obverse die was used on 1880-CC VAM-7 & 1880-CC VAM-7A; then polished down & re-used on 1880-CC VAM-8 & 1880-CC VAM-9.
