Description
The 1877 Proof Dime Pattern - J-1498 is a proof dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is William Barber's Liberty head often called the sailor head, which he had used on the 1875 twenty-cent, half eagle and eagle patterns and on the 1876 dollar patterns; in 1877 it went onto the dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar. USPatterns.com confirms eight, two of which were later silver-plated, and Judd's silver listing (J-1497) is unconfirmed. Henry Linderman, Director of the Mint, had a set of these patterns in his collection. Two of the copper pieces were silver-plated later; NGC grades them as J-1498. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1651 and Adams-Woodin 1544. Cataloged as PCGS #61833.
