Description
The 1874 Proof Twenty Cent Pattern - J-1355 is a proof twenty-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. Its obverse is the seated Liberty by the Philadelphia sculptor Joseph A. Bailly, first used on the 1873 trade dollar pattern J-1315, and its reverse, by William Barber, is close to the eagle adopted for the twenty-cent piece in 1875, except that the second arrowhead points well above the T of TWENTY and all three leaves point toward the eagle's wing. About 20 are known in copper, at least one of them on a thick planchet. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1499, Adams-Woodin 1386 and Taxay EP959. Cataloged as PCGS #61659.
