Description
The 1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1493 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It was struck from the regular 1876 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com believes the 1876 copper strikings from regular dies were made for sale to collectors in sets, which were only partly complete that year. Five examples are accounted for, one of them gilt; USPatterns.com notes that the piece is often confused with J-1489, which has the coronet centered between the sixth and seventh stars. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1646 and Adams-Woodin 1468. Cataloged as PCGS #61815.
