1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1488
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1488 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of two transitional double eagles of 1876: the obverse is in the 1877 style, with the top of Liberty's coronet centered between the sixth and seventh stars, and the reverse is the regular 1876 die reading TWENTY D. On the earlier obverses the coronet nearly touches the seventh star. The single gold example came to light in 1909, when John Haseltine sold it to William Woodin; it later passed through the Newcomer, Green and Farouk collections, has not been seen since, and has been described as a one-sided proof. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1641, Adams-Woodin 1464 and Taxay EP1023. Cataloged as PCGS #61810.
