1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1492
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1492 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of two transitional double eagles of 1876: both sides are in the style used from 1877 to 1907, with Liberty's coronet centered between the sixth and seventh stars and the reverse reading TWENTY DOLLARS in full. It was struck from a different obverse die, with the date close to the tip of Liberty's bust, probably the first die made with the new star arrangement and rejected after this trial. The single example is gilt, and NGC lists it only as gilt. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1645 and Taxay EP1027. Cataloged as PCGS #71917.
