Description
The 1876 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1490 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is one of two transitional double eagles of 1876: both sides are in the style used from 1877 to 1907, with Liberty's coronet centered between the sixth and seventh stars and the reverse reading TWENTY DOLLARS in full. The single gold example came to light in 1909, when John Haseltine sold it to William Woodin. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1643, Adams-Woodin 1466 and Taxay EP1025. Cataloged as PCGS #61812.
