Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1322 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is close to the regular trade dollar design but with a wider sea, and its reverse a small perched eagle holding a ribbon in its beak that loops almost closed. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. Over 50 are believed to exist. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-4. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1465, Adams-Woodin 1308 and Taxay EP917. Cataloged as PCGS #61608.
