Description

The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1278 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse, by William Barber, is a Liberty head facing left in a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with the hair tied in a knot and bound with pearls, and its reverse is the wreath die reading TRADE DOLLAR first used on J-1220. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. About ten are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1420, Adams-Woodin 1299 and Taxay EP924. Cataloged as PCGS #61563.
