Struck in the standard silver alloy, J-1319 features what may be among the final design refinements tested before the Trade Dollar entered production later in 1873. The entries in the highest J-numbers of the 1873 dollar series represent the ultimate conclusion of the design competition that had consumed three years of the Mint's creative resources and produced over 140 distinct dollar pattern varieties.
