Description

The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1316 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is J. A. Bailly's seated Liberty facing left, with cotton bales, tobacco plants and wheat sheaves around her, and its reverse a small, stocky eagle perched on a shield and facing right, with E PLURIBUS UNUM above and 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE and TRADE DOLLAR below; the reverse was also used on J-1288. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. About half a dozen are known. It is struck in silver with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1459, Adams-Woodin 1312 and Taxay EP911. Cataloged as PCGS #61602.
