Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1314 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Indian Princess design, Liberty seated facing left with a liberty pole and cap, her left hand on a globe and two flags behind her, and its reverse a small eagle with raised wings under a wide ribbon reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, with IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below and the weight and fineness. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. At least two are known in white metal. USPatterns.com notes that many of the white metal trade dollar patterns came from the collection of Mint Director Henry Linderman and may have been struck for his own cabinet. It is struck in white metal with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1457, Adams-Woodin 1327 and Taxay EP909. Cataloged as PCGS #61600.
