Description
The 1873 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1310 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Indian Princess design, Liberty seated facing left with a liberty pole and cap, her left hand on a globe and two flags behind her, and its reverse a small eagle with raised wings under a wide ribbon reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, with IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below and the weight and fineness. It is one of the six designs that the Mint sold in sets of trade dollar patterns for $30; Edward Cogan's December 1878 sale catalogue mentions 60 sets sold. Over 50 are believed to exist. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-4. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1453, Adams-Woodin 1324 and Taxay EP905. Cataloged as PCGS #61596.
